As I am studying the Sermon on the Mount, there appears to be a simple common interpretation on the surface and a much deeper interpretation as I read all the commentaries. Now, while the deeper commentary interpretations make a lot of sense, I wonder how many people sitting on that hill got it. Did people only get Jesus' deeper messages 100 years later as they read through the gospels and pondered them at length or did some of them actually get it the first time they heard it?

If humans are similar to what they are today, each person listening to Christ on that hill would have gleaned their own pieces from the sermon. It probably would not have dawned on many of them the significance of what was said until well after that.

I would also suppose that those who had the texts would be more likely to glean more from it as time goes on. Every time I read a passage of Scripture, some new twist or insight that I hadn't seen before.

Peace

That's kind of what I think, too, Paul. Thanks for confirming.

As I study the fifth chapter of Matt. it become clear to me these people most likely didn't get in that one setting what we get today. You must remember many may never have heard of Jesus or his teaching. As they do today someone might have said, "you need to hear this guy, he's good". Jesus was speaking to new believers, how many of us can say we got it all the first time we heard it on anything. At the some time they might have got everything they needed to effect change in lifestyle or attitude. These people must remember more of what was said because it wasn't put down yet, so more could have filtered through. GW

what is really cool is that (now correct me if i am wrong ) i hear that we only really hear about 10% of what is said.

if we only hear 10% of what is said, then what % of what is said do we actually understand? not sure

my facts are a bit scarce, but nevertheless, every word of what was said on that hill 2000 years ago was repeated by the Holy Spirit and recorded for us to study today.

Arrow

If the percentages follow the earlier pattern, then you would only understand about 1%.
