David - your sermon this sunday - when you talked about the preserving power of salt and the world spoiling, the church uncaring - started me thinking... did not pick up a pencil right then but did start writing it in my head.

that afternoon a friend from another state called and said that her sister-in-law had just discovered she was dieing. she did not know Christ. my friend witnessed to her and Alice, the dieing woman, used profanity saying that God was to blame for the bad things that had happened in her life and she did not want anything to do with Him.

my friend cried as she told me this and she asked me to pray that her sister-in-law would come to know Christ - that the rest of Alice's family would also come to Christ.

i started praying and thought of how my friend illustrated the sermon this morning - being salt, caring about a spoiling world.

my friend's sister in law died today. before she died, she called my friend to her bedside and, with her last ounce of strength, grabbed my friend's hand, squeezed it and asked her to sing, "Amazing Grace" at her funeral. we take this with faith that Alice came to know Christ on her last day. the old Alice would rather have used profanity than ask my friend to sing this song at her funeral. this was the new Alice.

so i post this lyric, thanking you for your sermon and asking the body of Christ at Antioch to pray for my friend and Alice's family - that the tears everyone is shedding now might be seeds of joy to eternal life for those left grieving for this woman - much loved by her family, deeply mourned, now greeted by her Savior in heaven.

I WILL BE SALT
© Deb Rempel 2006

Verse One
People around me
Are wasting away –
Spoiling, oh Jesus,
Losing their faith.
I have ignored their
Desperate calls --
A rotting world
Crying for salt.
But

Chorus
I will be salt.
I’ll taste of You, Christ.
I’ll season dead souls with
Your words of life.
I’ll choose what I say
With reverence and awe.
By Your strength, Jesus,
I will be salt.

Verse Two
Like salt mixed in meat
Will keep it fresh,
Like life-giving salt
Holds away death.
Speak through me, Lord
So I am used
As salt in this world
Dying for You.

Chorus

lyrics are as follows:

I WILL BE SALT

Verse One
People around me
Are wasting away -
Spoiling, oh Father,
Losing their faith.
I cannot ignore
Their desperate calls.
This dying world
Is crying for salt
So

Chorus
I will be salt.
I'll taste of Your light.
I'll season lost souls
With Your words of life.
I'll choose what I say
With reverence and awe.
By Your strength, Father,
I will be salt.

Verse Two
Those I love, Father
Have so little time
One moment we live;
One moment we die!
Flavor my speech, Lord,
With your loving truth.
Draw them, oh Father,
Draw them to You!
